Low Price Perfect Pullup

I waited a few weeks to review this as I wanted to put this thing through it's paces. At this point, I'm satisfied with my purchase.

Installation - Install was straight forward and easy. the instructions were easy to follow and understand and the unit went in without any problems.

Operation - The unit functions just like it should and just like you would expect it to. It has a very solid feel and as long as you measured correctly when installing the 4 parts to the door frame correctly, the swing action of the unit up to the top latching hooks works perfectly.

Use - First time using it, I (naturally) was very cautious about putting all of my weight (175lbs) onto the unit. I ordinarily do pullups at the gym with a weight belt and a 25, 35 or 45 lb weight attached to it but I'm still a bit leery of doing that with this unit JUST yet. I'm sure it will be fine since they say it will support 300 lbs. The only thing I don't think I'll try are kipping pullups... way too risky. It may jump out of the sockets up top that it latches down into.

The handles are a bit awkward to get used to if you've never used them at first. This was the first time for me but I quickly got used to the twisting motion. I haven't felt any discomfort in my shoulders or wrists so I can't think of anything being wrong with the motion. The handles make the pullups a little more difficult than typical pullups. Normally I can do 15 or 20 pullups with my palms facing me and maybe around 10~12 with a wide grip palms out method. With the handles, 10 was a challenge and it felt like more emphasis was being put on my actual biceps than my lats.

I think the reason for this is because of the more close grip natured setup. My door frame doesn't allow enough room to spread out my hands to get a wide grip stance on the bar to put more emphasis on the lats. It's not a huge problem as the lats are still being worked.. just not quite as isolated as they seem to be with a wide grip. If you've got a wider frame door that falls within the allowable install width of the unit, I would suggest installing it there. My house doesn't have any. I can't fault the unit on this as this was a limitation of my house design rather than the unit. It can extend out to I believe 36 inches across so if you've got a door that can use the full 3 foot extension of the unit, I think it would permit that wider grip. The only problem I think would happen would be that the handles at the wider grip could prove to be a bit awkward in movement but I could be wrong.

If I had to say anything negative about the unit, it's that when it's in the lower position for the Australian pullups, no matter which direction your body is facing, the unit swings a few inches during the pullup motion and clacks against the lip on the door frame that stops the door when it closes. It gets annoying. I used some of the small stick on felt pads that we use on our furniture in our living area (wood floors) and just cut one of those in half and stuck it on the door frame. This makes it virtually silent and the problem is solved. I just wish that there were some type of locking mechanism for the lower position to keep it from swinging. A small complaint though and not a deal breaker by any means.

I also have the leg/knee raise straps. Rather than writing a separate review, I figured I'd just throw it in with this one. They work well, maybe a hair over-sized for my preference but they do offer more support. Usually at the gym I don't use the straps but since my doorway doesn't allow the unit to be mounted high enough to hang from the unit with my hands and feet not touch the ground, the straps are the only way to get my legs fully extended. Again, a minor inconvenience.

The straps have a wrap around and clip onto itself with one of those spring loaded metal climbing style hooks. Very high quality and very sturdy. If I could complain about anything about em, it would be that I wish they hooked onto the bar like the pull up handles for quicker removal. It's a bit of a pain to have to unlatch them if I'm doing a split set of pullups and leg raises. I would recommend a set of strap on ankle weights to use with the hanging straps.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with the products and I like it much more than the one piece units that brace themselves on the door and hang from the top of the door frame.Get more detail about Perfect Pullup.
